Routines are Important
Most kids do very well with routine. It’s usually when there’s no routine, or there’s a deviation from the routine, that more challenging behaviors surface. There are many benefits to maintaining a routine, but there are also benefits in teaching flexibility.
Flexibility is Key I don’t know if this happens in your home, but whenever our kids know that a fun outing is planned, they are on it! I’m talking, “yes ma’am,” “no sir,” school work completed in 2-3 hours, on it! But try asking them to get ready to go, and they have no idea what to expect. We get playing around, procrastination, and just flat out wasting time. Often times these are the same behaviors we as parents, present before the Lord. He gives us an instruction with clear directions, but because we don’t know the outcome, or can’t see “what’s in it for me,” we procrastinate. We take a long time getting ready, often times not only disobeying, but disrespecting our Heavenly Father. Not knowing what’s on the other side of a simple act of obedience. Yes, what God has for you is for you, but sometimes you delay what He has for you, simply because your actions are not aligned with His will.
Simply Obey Let me explain it to you this way. Sometimes, when I spontaneously tell my children to get ready to go, and it’s something we haven’t planned or discussed, it may be because something unexpectedly came up. But most of the time, it’s because I just want to do some something fun. I want to bless them.
Because it’s not something we had in our plans, they may whine and complain. They might even waist so much time, we can no long go where I was planning to take them. Now, I’ll probably try it again at some point, but the outing is delayed, because of their actions. The same goes for us, as children of God. We must remember God desires complete obedience. And, delayed obedience is disobedience. Stop delaying God’s blessings for your life, or the lives He desires to use you to bless. Move with purpose! Get out of your own way, and always be ready for His instructions.
